PDOIS Congress endorses Honourable Suwaibou Touray as successor to Halifa Sallah.

The People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) has unveiled a new leadership lineup following its recent party congress, marking a significant generational shift within one of The Gambia’s longest-standing political parties.

Honourable Swaibou Touray emerged as the new Secretary General of PDOIS, taking over from veteran politician and founding figure Halifa Sallah, whose decades-long influence has shaped the party’s ideological direction and national presence.

In the same congress, party delegates elected Essa Wally as the new Chairman of PDOIS, entrusting him with the responsibility of steering the party through its next phase.

Party members and supporters have congratulated Wally and expressed confidence in his ability to provide firm leadership at a time when calls for political reform and system change continue to grow.

The congress also resulted in key appointments across the party’s structures.

Alpha Robinson was elected to the Political Bureau, strengthening the party’s decision-making body. Meanwhile, Fatou Sallah Jobe was appointed Secretary to the Women’s Bureau, replacing Edi Jallow, in a move seen as part of efforts to revitalise women’s participation and leadership within the party.

Beyond the party’s internal structures, Dr. Bai Biran Jagne was also elected as Secretary to the Sovereign Wealth Fund Board, a position considered strategic in discussions around national resource management and economic accountability.

The leadership changes reflect PDOIS’ continued emphasis on organisational renewal, ideological consistency, and its long-standing advocacy for governance reform and social justice.

Supporters say the new leadership is expected to build on the party’s legacy while responding to contemporary political and economic challenges facing The Gambia.

The congress concluded with renewed calls for system change, as party members reaffirmed PDOIS’ commitment to democratic accountability, transparency, and people-centred governance.
