Banjul, The Gambia — Religious and traditional leaders from across Africa have been called upon to play a stronger role in promoting peace, tolerance, and human rights in their communities. The call was made during the official opening of a three-day training organized by the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) at the Kairaba Beach Hotel in Banjul.

Delivering solidarity messages, Bishop Bannie Manga and Ambassador Ebrima Ousman Ndure highlighted The Gambia’s model of peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims, describing it as an example the rest of Africa should emulate.

“The spirit of unity between Muslims and Christians in The Gambia is something the world must see,” Ambassador Ndure said.

Bishop Manga encouraged interfaith dialogue and understanding, describing theology as “faith seeking understanding.” He urged participants to use scripture, tradition, experience, and reason to transform African societies.

Representing the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Vice Chairperson Alhaji Cherno Mamadou Jallow warned against the rise of hate speech and misinformation, particularly in the context of elections.

“You, as moral and spiritual guides, are the heart of the community. Use your influence to counter hate speech and promote inclusion,” he said.

He added that religious and traditional leaders have historically played key roles in fostering peace and dialogue across Africa and should continue to do so in the digital age.

Mr. Sadikh Niass, Adviser to ACDHRS, said the meeting builds on a similar initiative held last year and represents a deepening partnership between community leaders and the African human rights system.

“Your wisdom enriches the human rights mechanisms of Africa,” he noted. “You bring community realities into formal frameworks.”

The training, which runs until October 16, 2025, aims to enhance the knowledge of participants on regional human rights instruments and encourage them to engage directly with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights through observer status and ongoing collaboration.
