Lawmaker Denies Allegations of Voter Fraud

Yahya Menteng Sanyang, the National Assembly Member (NAM) and senior member of the Unite Movement for Change (UMC), has bluntly declined allegations of his involvement in voter registration fraud.

The Latrikunda Sabiji NAM made this clarification at a press conference held on Monday at the UMC’s Kanifing Municipality regional office in Fajara.

“Let me be very clear. I have not been charged with any crime because I have committed no crime. I was invited by the police operationally regarding issues related to birth certificates. Let me be very blunt. I have never procured a birth certificate,” NAM Sanyang emphasizes.

He added that he has never worked in any national document production centre, nor has he ever visited one, maintaining that he has never signed a certificate nor employed anyone else to do so. The Latrikunda Sabiji lawmaker further mentioned that he does not even have the technical capacity to verify the authenticity of such documents, adding that his role is that of a representative, not a civil registrar.

Urging the government of the day, through this experience, that he has seen the gap in the country’s laws.

“I urge you to work with the National Assembly and use your majority to fix these legislative reforms. A government’s lasting legacy is built on good laws. Every administration should strive for a legacy that protects its citizens as it is now, how history will remember you,” implies Sanyang.

I could be recalled that Hon. Yahya Sanyang was invited by the Faji-kunda police station for questioning on Saturday for an alleged involvement in voter registration fraud, the allegations he denies. He was given a self bail, which was revoked as he reported to the police the following day. He was later released on bail on Sunday night.
