Residents living near the former Yuruwa Company site, which was known for manufacturing red blocks in the early 2000s, are expressing growing concerns over the site’s current use as a dumping ground. Speaking to New Global Media, Sainey Ceesay, a compound owner living nearby, described how the once-thriving company, which moved operations to Bonto, Pirang years ago, has now left behind an unbearable situation for local residents.
According to Ceesay, the factory’s production of red blocks had long been a source of discomfort due to the thick smoke that disturbed nearby compounds. “This company used to make red blocks, but the smoke was disturbing the residents of compounds around it,” he recalled. As a result of these concerns, the company was asked to relocate from the residential area, which led to its move to Pirang. However, Ceesay noted, the area formerly occupied by the company has since become a site for dumping waste, aggravating the residents’ daily lives.
“People come here at night and leave their waste, and it’s causing so much disturbance. The smell is unbearable,” Ceesay lamented, stressing that the site’s transformation into a dumping ground is making life increasingly uncomfortable for his family and neighbors. “We want the Brikama Area Council and the Government to intervene and help us,” he urged. “This situation is unbearable, and it’s affecting our health and well-being.”
