Dr. Lamin J. Darbo refutes reports of presidential declaration

Prominent Gambian human rights lawyer and constitutional scholar, Dr. Lamin J. Darbo, has denied reports claiming he has formally declared his candidacy for the 2026 presidential election.

The reports followed an interview aired on Teledal TV, which suggested Dr. Darbo had announced an independent bid for the presidency.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Dr. Darbo said his remarks were mischaracterised.

“I wish to correct the record: I have not formally announced my candidacy for the presidency,” Dr. Darbo clarified.

“Any such announcement will be a solemn national event, shared transparently with the Gambian people and the media through a dedicated press conference.”

He explained that his current engagements are focused on consultations with his advisory team and national stakeholders, stressing that no final decision has been made.

“The misquotation is unfortunate. I remain committed to a principled and inclusive process. Should I decide to run, the Gambian public will be the first to know—through a formal, nationally broadcast announcement,” he said.

Dr. Darbo also reaffirmed his openness to coalition-building with like-minded political actors, but emphasised that such discussions are still exploratory.

His office urged the media to exercise restraint and accuracy in reporting on matters of national importance, noting that any updates on Dr. Darbo’s political intentions will be shared only through official channels.
