Latrikunda Sabiji Lawmaker Questioned by Police, Released Without Charge

Hon. Yahya Menteng Sanyang, the National Assembly Member for Latrikunda Sabiji and a member of the UNITE Movement for Change (UMC), was questioned by police in connection with issues reportedly linked to the ongoing voter registration exercise.

Mr. Sanyang was summoned to the Fagikunda Police Station over allegations that he attempted to assist three individuals in registering for voter identification cards during the ongoing supplementary voter registration exercise. He was questioned and provided a statement before being released without charge.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page shortly after his release, Mr. Sanyang said he had committed no offense. “I am not charged with any crime because I did not commit any crime. I am more resolute and determined now than before,” he wrote.

The circumstances surrounding the police inquiry were not immediately clear, and officials have not publicly detailed the specific concerns that prompted the questioning.

Support for Mr. Sanyang came from Talib Ahmed Bensouda, Mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council and a fellow member of the UMC, who expressed solidarity in a message posted online.

“Thank you UMC! Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere! We believe in you Honourable Yahya Menteng Sanyang. Though far, my thoughts are with you,” Mr. Bensouda wrote.

The incident comes amid heightened political activity tied to the voter registration process, a critical phase in the country’s electoral cycle.
