The United Democratic Party (UDP) has concluded activities marking its 30th anniversary with an awards ceremony recognising members and supporters for their contributions to the party and its political journey over the past three decades.
The ceremony, held at the UDP Secretariat in Manjai on September 7, 2026, brought together senior party officials, members, supporters and guests to commemorate three decades of the party’s political activities and honour individuals who have played significant roles in its development.
In his keynote address, UDP leader Lawyer Ousainou Darboe described the party’s 30-year journey as one characterised by determination, resilience and commitment to its political objectives.
Mr Darboe commended the anniversary organising committee for successfully coordinating the celebrations, particularly the introduction of new features to the programme.
The UDP leader also called on party members and coalition partners to remain focused on issues affecting the country and avoid what he described as unnecessary political debates.
“We cannot afford to be distracted,” Darboe said, urging members and supporters to concentrate on promoting policies and programmes aimed at advancing the interests of The Gambia.
He further spoke about the party’s political ambitions ahead of the December 2026 presidential election, expressing confidence that continued cooperation with coalition partners could pave the way for a UDP-led government.
The UDP party leader said the party’s next major celebration should be centred on victory for the Gambian people and the election of a government capable of responding to their concerns and aspirations.
The occasion also paid tribute to UDP members and supporters who had died over the years. The party noted that their contributions remain an important part of its history and political struggle.
Among those recognised at the ceremony were former senior civil servant and diplomat Amadou S. Taal, former Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Honourable Amadou Sanneh, and Honourable Kebba K. Barrow, among others.
The anniversary programme concluded with renewed calls for unity, discipline and continued commitment to the party’s objectives ahead of the 2026 presidential election.
The UDP said it would continue working with its coalition partners towards what it described as the creation of a better Gambia, while urging its members and supporters to remain disciplined, focused and committed to issues of national interest.
