The community of Sanyang is gearing up for the maiden Annual General Meeting of the Sanyang Development Fund (SDF), scheduled for 13 December 2025, organisers told The Voice.
They say the inaugural AGM will be held under the theme: “Laying the Foundation for the Sustainable Development of Sanyang”, and is expected to serve as a platform for dialogue aimed at promoting transparency, accountability and unity in the community’s development efforts.
Sanyang Diaspora Ambassador in The Gambia and SDF Public Relations Officer, Abdoulie Sallah Fatty, said the meeting seeks to bring all Sanyang natives under one umbrella to accelerate the town’s development aspirations.
“The AGM will provide the space for members to interact, share ideas and chart new pathways for attracting the development the community urgently needs,” he said.
Fatty noted that the SDF has helped strengthen unity among Sanyang natives at home and abroad, fostering contacts among families and creating avenues for dialogue. He added that one of the year’s major achievements was the government’s decision to shift the proposed location of a deep-sea port initially planned for Sanyang.
“Without the timely intervention of the SDF, SUKA and other concerned citizens, the Gambia Ports Authority and Alport would have taken half of the Sanyang community,” he said. “We have also contributed significantly to improving services at the Sanyang Health Centre, and worked with SUKA to support bereaved families in repatriating the remains of loved ones from abroad for dignified burial.”
Looking ahead, Fatty said the SDF plans to invest heavily in youth education and skills training, support programmes for women and children, and expand street-lighting across Sanyang. He urged residents—particularly youth—to join the association to help realise its objectives.
Fatty concluded by commending all stakeholders contributing to the growth of the association, calling for unity, understanding and teamwork in the interest of the community.
