More than three years after The Gambia passed the Persons with Disabilities Act in 2021, meaningful implementation remains largely absent, raising serious questions about political will and accountability.
While the law promised equal rights, protection and inclusion, many persons with disabilities continue to face inaccessible public spaces, limited employment opportunities and weak institutional support, as if the protections guaranteed on paper do not yet apply in real life.
Each delay reinforces a painful reality, that without enforcement, the Act risks becoming symbolic rather than transformative, leaving an already marginalised community waiting for rights that were legally recognised but never fully delivered.
