On Tuesday, the 27th January 2026, at about 20:00 hrs, the Gambia Immigration Department (GID) Gunjur Immigration Post, hosting personnel of Drug Law Enforcement Agency (DLEAG), was vandalised by a mob comprising youths in Gunjur who were protesting for the release of three (3) suspected drug peddlers arrested by field operatives of DLEAG.
The vandalisation of the station occurred after the arrested suspects were transported by the DLEAG operatives to Kotu. However, noting that the station houses both immigration and DLEAG personnel, the angry mob attacked the immigration station, throwing stones at the complex, causing damage to the roof, office doors, and windows. No personnel were injured.
In response to this altercation, the GID and DLEAG Officers in Gunjur, in a joint operation, apprehended and detained about 20 suspects in the village, in pursuit of accountability. These individuals are currently undergoing screening and will subsequently be handed over to the Gambia Police Force for further investigations.
The GID strongly condemns this act of vandalism and lawlessness that poses life-threatening risk to our personnel deployed to serve communities and maintain public trust. We urged communities and citizens to draw restraint, support law enforcement agencies and safeguard the safety of security personnel and government facilities.
