In an effort to strengthen their influence and present a united front, the Gambia First Coalition (GFC), the United Democratic Party (UDP), and several other opposition parties and movements have come together to form a political alliance. This momentous collaboration was solidified through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in preparation for the 2026–2027 elections.
The alliance, which comprises of eight opposition parties and movements, represents a significant step towards greater cohesion within the country’s political landscape. Through the MoU, all signatories have pledged to work together, with the goal of enhancing coordination, fostering political cooperation, and presenting a unified stance on crucial national matters.
This coalition is a testament to the growing inclination of opposition actors to reduce fragmentation and increase their collective strength as the country approaches the upcoming presidential and legislative contests. While each party retains its unique identity and leadership, the MoU outlines shared values, methods for consultation, and frameworks for joint involvement.
Political analysts predict that the formation of this alliance could potentially transform the pre-election climate, depending on the ability of member parties to maintain cooperation and handle internal differences effectively. The signatories have emphasized that the coalition is rooted in democratic principles, national development priorities, and a commitment to peaceful political engagement.
