Lower Saloum NAM hints possible unrest as Jammeh’s anticipated return deadline nears

The Gambian government has been warned to act fast after former President Yahya Jammeh hinted at a possible return, sparking fears of unrest in a country still healing from his 22-year rule.

Sainey Jawara, Member of Parliament for Lower Saloum, described Jammeh’s remarks as a “serious security threat” and urged authorities to take decisive action.

Speaking in parliament while tabling a motion, Jawara said the former leader’s statements during a gathering in Kanilai could undermine the country’s hard-won peace and stability.

Jammeh, who ruled The Gambia for more than two decades, has been indicted by the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission for crimes including murder, rape, and torture.

He has not yet responded to the allegations, but his recent comments have reignited concerns about his influence among certain factions in the country.

“The Gambia is still navigating the long and painful process of national reconciliation,” Jawara said.

“It is deeply troubling that Jammeh continues to make divisive and provocative statements at a time when the country is striving to heal. His words threaten our democracy, unity, and the rule of law.”

Citizens have expressed concern that the former president’s comments could disrupt national peace and security, putting the well-being of Gambians at risk.

Jawara emphasized that the government must act swiftly to prevent any attempts by Jammeh to stir tensions.

“Jammeh can never again be a president of this country,” he said, adding that protecting democratic institutions and maintaining stability must remain the government’s top priority.
