The Gambia’s national power utility, NAWEC, has officially ended its power supply contract with Karpowership marking a significant shift in the country’s energy strategy.
In a statement released today, NAWEC acknowledged the role Karpowership has played since 2018 in supplying a substantial portion of The Gambia’s electricity through its floating power plant.
The company praised the Turkish firm’s “dedication, professionalism, and collaboration” over the years.
The contract’s conclusion aligns with The Gambia’s Energy Road Map 2022–2040, which aims to enhance energy independence.
As part of the transition, NAWEC plans to reactivate its own power generators and invest in expanding domestic renewable energy sources.
NAWEC assured the public that contingency measures are in place to ensure a stable electricity supply during the transition period.
The utility company also expressed its appreciation for the partnership with Karpowership, which it described as instrumental in supporting the country’s electricity needs.
