In the early hours of Tuesday, officers of the Gambia Immigration Department (GID), through its Border Patrol Unit stationed at the Tanji Migration Management Unit, successfully intercepted 301 would-be migrants in Brufut.
According to official reports from GID, the group comprised 259 males, 42 females, and 3 minors. Nationality breakdown revealed 218 Gambians, alongside 57 Senegalese, 14 Guineans, 8 Malians, 2 Sierra Leoneans, and 2 Nigerians.
Authorities described the operation as one of the largest interceptions in recent months, reaffirming GID’s commitment to curbing irregular migration while promoting safer and more regular migration routes.
A spokesperson for the department emphasized that while border enforcement remains a priority, the GID continues to work with regional partners to address the root causes of irregular migration. The presence of minors and women among the intercepted group highlights the humanitarian challenges involved in such operations.
This latest development comes amid growing concerns over migration pressures in West Africa, where economic hardship and limited opportunities continue to drive many toward risky journeys across borders.
