Faraba Su Community Opens First-Ever Lower Basic School, Creating Jobs for Young Graduates

The people of Faraba Su on Saturday, 11th October 2025, inaugurated their first-ever lower basic school, a community-owned institution that not only brings education closer to home but also creates employment opportunities for newly qualified graduates.

The initiative, led by Alieu Sanyang, the youngest Alkalo in Kombo East District, marks a historic step in the community’s development journey. The project fulfils the dream of his late father, who envisioned accessible education for every child in Faraba Su.

“This was part of our School Improvement Plan to construct a lower basic school because we’ve seen how our students struggled to travel long distances to attend schools in neighbouring communities. We wanted to make education available right at our doorstep, a school owned and managed by the community, giving us a strong sense of ownership and responsibility,” Alkalo Sanyang said.

Sanyang expressed gratitude to all donors and partners who contributed to the project, noting that the school represents both an educational milestone and an opportunity for young, qualified teachers from the area to find meaningful employment.

Delivering the keynote address, David Gomez, Director of Governance and Decentralisation at the Ministry of Lands, Regional Government, and Religious Affairs, described the initiative as a clear demonstration of the government’s broader commitment to making education accessible in every community.

“Although this school was not constructed through government or donor funding, I believe that in time, the state will take full responsibility for its management. Future development, staffing, and the provision of learning materials should eventually become a government responsibility,” Gomez said.

The new school stands as a symbol of community determination and youth empowerment, a reminder that local action and shared vision can transform lives for generations to come.
