Ousainou Fofana – The Poet with a Magical Voice

Ousainou Fofana, known to many as Fofana Kanyi or “Da Dinkendo,” is emerging as one of The Gambia’s most compelling spoken word artists, captivating audiences with his lyrical voice and socially conscious poetry.

Born in Farato with ancestral roots in Jokadou Dasilami, Fofana’s journey into poetry began in high school, shaped by personal loss and cultural immersion. “My journey as a spoken word poet began in high school. I was shy and reserved, often writing poems for my late sister, Awa Bah, who would perform them during school assemblies and inspire many,” he shared in a recent interview with The Fatu Network.

Initially drawn to rap, Fofana shifted to poetry after reflecting on his religious beliefs. “My breakthrough came around 2019/2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when I performed a multilingual poem to raise awareness about the virus. Since then, I have continued to write and perform poetry that addresses real social issues,” he recounted.

Despite facing financial challenges and limited sponsorship, Fofana remains committed to his craft. He is currently preparing for a poetry concert scheduled for 29 November at the Gambia College Hall.

“I draw inspiration from Usman Rahman, the CEO of Dextap. My greatest achievement as a poet has been mentoring and inspiring young people in my community,” he expressed joyfully.

Fofana’s influence now extends beyond the stage. “To me, that is the most fulfilling part of my journey—helping others find their voices through poetry,” he added.

As he continues to inspire through performance and mentorship, Ousainou Fofana stands as a powerful example of how poetry can serve as a bridge between emotion, culture, and community.
