The readiness of The Gambia for the 2026 General Elections is currently being evaluated by the Commonwealth. A team is in the country to review the electoral environment and determine if the deployment of a Commonwealth Observer Group is feasible. From 18 to 25 July, the Pre-Election Assessment Mission is meeting with various stakeholders, including the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Banjul, Ambassador Lang Yabou.
The team, led by Lindiwe Malaleka, will also engage with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), government institutions, civil society organizations, and development partners. Their goal is to thoroughly assess the election environment and provide technical support and training to strengthen the IEC’s election management capabilities ahead of the polls on 5 December 2026.
Ambassador Lang Yabou welcomed the delegation and expressed the Government’s commitment to holding peaceful, fair, and transparent elections. He also assured the mission of the Government’s full cooperation during their visit.
The Commonwealth conducts such assessments regularly in support of its member countries before national elections, with the aim of promoting credible and democratic electoral processes. This information was provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of The Gambia.
