Busumbala native in police net for tampering and stealing NAWEC electric cables

Brikama police’s Criminal Investigation Department have arrested Muhammad Kuyateh, a resident of Busumbala, over alleged Nawec Borhole cable destruction and theft.

The incident happened at Nyambai Forest and was reported by a Nawec staff on 20th January 2026.

Preliminary investigation revealed that “electric cables supplying the installation had been tampered with and removed, prompting an official complaint to the Police.”

“As part of the investigation, CCTV footage from the borehole facility was reviewed after anomalies were detected through existing monitoring mechanisms. The footage led to the identification of a suspect, following which Police arrested Muhammad Kuyateh, a resident of Busumbala, who is allegedly linked to the incident.”

“The suspect has since been cautioned, charged, and detained while investigations continue.

“The Gambia Police Force strongly cautions against vandalism and theft of public infrastructure, noting that such acts disrupt essential services and negatively impact communities. Members of the public are urged to report any suspicious activity around power and water installations to the nearest police station.”
