The EU supports the global movement against torture

 

On 15 October, Deputy Head of Mission Raphaël Brigandi welcomed the United Against Torture Consortium which is holding a two days meeting in Banjul.

Supported by the EU, the consortium is composed of 6 CSO cooperating with 400 organizations in 100 countries.

During the gathering in The The Gambia, the participants will take stock on the progress of the first two years of the consortium’s activities and identify new priorities and needs to further strengthen collectively the anti-torture movement at national and international levels.

At the opening session, commending the members of the network for their relentless efforts , Mr. Brigandi also stated: “The EU is equally committed to combat torture and other ill-treatment. In 2019, we adopted our related practical Guidelines for our engagement with third countries and in multilateral human rights fora to support ongoing efforts in this area. The guidelines were complemented and reinforced by the EU Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy 2020–2027 which is our compass that steers the EU action on human rights and democracy across the world.”
