The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) on 17 September 2026 intercepted 104 prospective irregular migrants in two separate operations in the West Coast Region (WCR).
In Batokunku, the GIDโs Border Patrol Unit (BPU) and Migration Management Unit (MMU), based in Tanji, intercepted 23 Gambian nationals, comprising 18 males, 5 females, and 1 minor. A Senegalese national suspected of migrant smuggling was also arrested and remains in custody to assist with ongoing investigations.
In a separate operation in Sanyang, a joint team comprising the GID, Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), and Gambia Police Force (GPF) disrupted a planned irregular sea departure, intercepting 81 prospective migrants, including 21 Gambians, 50 Senegalese, and 10 Guineans. The group comprised 78 males, 2 females, and 1 minor.
The operations reaffirm the GIDโs commitment to inter-agency collaboration in combating irregular migration and transnational organised crime while strengthening border management and governance.
