Witness Details Police Beating of Omar Badjie Before His Death

By Isatou Sarr

The inquest into the death of Omar Badjie, who died following an encounter with police on 26 September 2025, continued on Monday at Brikama Magistrates’ Court with the testimony of the seventh witness, Musa Kanyi, a painter and security guard from Mandinary.

Kanyi told the court that he witnessed police officers forcibly handling Badjie on the day of the incident. He said he met Badjie around 10–11 a.m. at Mandinary Mortuary, where Badjie was employed. As he was leaving, Kanyi observed people running and was struck by a police officer while trying to understand the situation.

He described seeing four officers carrying Badjie from a grassy area toward a mango tree, with his hands cuffed behind his back. According to Kanyi, Badjie told the officers he could not walk, prompting one officer to slap him and strike him with a broken mango tree branch. Kanyi said he stepped back as the assault took place.

“When they tried to lift him, he could not walk,” Kanyi testified. “One officer then used a motorbike to transport him, but his legs were dangling. They decided to take him to Mandinary Health Center instead of the police station.”

Kanyi added that Badjie appeared exhausted when he arrived at the health center. He also said the stick used by the officers had broken and that he could not identify any of the officers, as it was his first time seeing them, and they were not in uniform.

The witness confirmed that he had been invited to Banjulinding Police Station to give a statement, which was officially entered into evidence as Exhibit MK1.

The case was adjourned to 15 December 2025 at 2:30 p.m. for further proceedings.
