Where Is Justice for Deyda Hydara?

December 16, 2004, remains one of the darkest days in Gambian history. On that day, Deyda Hydara, the fearless former managing editor of The Point Newspaper, was brutally gunned down, silencing one of the country’s most outspoken voices for press freedom. Yet, nearly two decades later, the question that haunts every citizen committed to justice is painfully simple: where is justice?

While Malick Jatta walks the streets freely, unburdened by accountability, Sanna Manjang faces charges for Hydara’s murder. The uneven pace of justice is a stark reminder of the failures of a system that should protect truth and punish impunity. It is not just a legal failing—it is a moral one. A society that allows the killers of its truth-tellers to go free sends a chilling message: speaking truth to power can be deadly, and the killers may never be held accountable.

Deyda Hydara was more than a journalist; he was a guardian of democracy, a voice for the voiceless, and a defender of the public’s right to know. To let his murder go unresolved is to betray the very principles he lived and died for.

It is time for the Gambian authorities, and indeed the world watching, to demand that justice is not delayed, and that those responsible for this heinous crime face the full weight of the law. Hydara’s legacy deserves nothing less.

Justice delayed is justice denied—but justice, if pursued relentlessly, can honor Deyda Hydara’s life and sacrifice. The people of The Gambia, and the global community, will be watching.
