Uzbekistan has completed a major restoration of the Imam al Bukhari Memorial Complex near Samarkand, a historic city in eastern Uzbekistan in Central Asia, reviving one of the most important religious sites in the Muslim world.
The redeveloped complex honours Imam Muhammad ibn Ismail al Bukhari, the ninth century Islamic scholar whose Sahih al Bukhari is regarded as the most authoritative collection of hadith in Sunni Islam.
It now includes a grand mosque, an expanded mausoleum, research and education facilities, libraries and spaces for international conferences.
Uzbek authorities say the project reflects a wider effort to restore Islamic heritage following the Soviet era and to position the country, which lies north of Afghanistan and east of the Caspian Sea, as a growing centre for religious tourism, scholarship and cultural exchange.
