UNITE- Led coalition 2026 signs mou

On Thursday, a significant event took place as Coalition 2026 officially signed a memorandum of understanding. This brought together various opposition parties and political movements in preparation for The Gambia’s presidential election on Dec. 5.
The signing ceremony, which took place at Penchami Hall within the Paradise Suites Hotel, was attended by leaders of the participating parties and prominent opposition figures.
The coalition leaders emphasized that this agreement marks a new era in opposition politics, where cooperation, national unity, and a shared vision for the future of the country take center stage. Representatives of the participating groups pledged to strengthen their collaboration as the election draws near.
As he accepted his role as the coalition’s flag bearer, Talib Ahmed Bensouda, leader of the UNITE party and mayor of Kanifing, expressed the importance of the coalition remaining bigger than any individual or political party.
“I will work towards ensuring that this coalition stays greater than any one of us, including myself,” Mr. Bensouda stated. “I will listen, consult, and respect our partners.”
He highlighted that building a successful coalition would require compromise, patience, and trust. He also mentioned the need for political leaders to prioritize the national interest over their personal ambitions. Ultimately, the mandate the coalition seeks belongs to the Gambian people.
Mr. Bensouda also acknowledged the increasing involvement of young people and women in the coalition, stating that their support reflects a desire for politics that bring tangible improvements rather than mere slogans.
According to official statistics, 57% of Gambians aged between 15 and 35 are not economically active, and only 42% are part of the labor force. He also drew attention to the inequality between men and women, with women’s labor force participation at 41.9% compared to 54.9% for men.
