The flag-bearer of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Ousainou Darboe, has pledged that a UDP-led government will prioritize support for farmers if elected to the presidency.
Speaking at a political rally in Bansang on Sunday, Darboe said his administration would engage the banking sector to establish development-focused units aimed at providing farmers with affordable loans, particularly targeting low-income farming communities.
“We will support farmers with loans at cheaper rates than those given to importers and exporters. The UDP will work with commercial banks to ensure farmers have access to credit at interest rates that will not burden them,” he said.
Darboe criticized the Barrow administration, accusing it of failing to address the pressing concerns of Gambians during the recently concluded constitutionally mandated ‘Meet-the-People’ tour. He alleged that the government used the platform mainly to attack the UDP rather than respond to citizens’ needs, thereby undermining the purpose of the exercise.
“They were only focused on Ousainu Darboe and the UDP while neglecting the real needs of the people,” he added.
The UDP leader said that while his administration, as required by the constitution would also embark on a nationwide tour if elected, it would avoid what he described as excessive spending. Instead, he said, a significant portion of the funds would be redirected towards purchasing fertilizer and other agricultural inputs to be distributed free of charge to farmers.
Darboe further told the gathering that the UDP has the capacity to swiftly initiate development projects for the benefit of citizens. He accused the current government of neglecting the primary concerns of the population, which he said has contributed to the continued irregular migration of young people.
According to Darboe, while infrastructure projects such as electricity and roads are important, they should not overshadow the urgent need for job creation for the youth.
