The UDP has decided to withdraw from the ongoing Coalition 2026 talks due to significant disputes concerning the coalition’s structure and operations. During a press conference today, UDP Leader Ousainu Darboe expressed the party’s initial intentions to participate in the discussions in good faith. However, the proposal for a candidate-led arrangement that would require the presidential nominee to stand as an independent was not in line with the UDP’s beliefs. Darboe explained that this approach would undermine responsibility and mirror the same issues the UDP encountered in the previous coalition in 2016.
Darboe also voiced his disapproval of the suggested formation of a governing council to supervise the presidency, deeming it unconstitutional. He further criticized the coalition’s method of selecting a candidate, as it grants equal voting power to all parties and groups, regardless of their level of public support.
Despite stepping away from the negotiations, Darboe expressed gratitude towards all the parties and organizations involved. He reiterated the UDP’s commitment to bringing about democratic change and announced that the party will now concentrate on forming an alliance with like-minded groups who prioritize constitutional governance, democratic accountability, and fairness.
