President Adama Barrow has warned supporters of former President Yahya Jammeh that there cannot be two presidents in the country and urged them to acknowledge his authority as the incumbent leader.
Speaking during his annual ‘Meet-the-People-Tour’ in Foni Buluck on Saturday, President Barrow said he was closely monitoring developments involving Jammeh at his exiled residence. He emphasized that the former president has no opportunity to return to power in The Gambia.
“Jammeh was the president here yesterday. But today, I am the president. I don’t know what the future holds,” President Barrow said.
The President issued a stern warning to Jammeh’s supporters against engaging in unlawful activities. He stressed that any such actions by this faction of the APRC would be met with strict enforcement of the law. “The government will not continue to condone these actions. Anyone affiliated with Jammeh must accept this bitter truth,” he said, adding that his administration would “crack down” on anyone who deliberately violates Gambian law.
President Barrow specifically addressed groups exploiting the country’s democratic space, referencing those previously calling themselves the “No-to-Alliance.” He warned that continued lawlessness would no longer be tolerated. “Whatever activities you were doing against the law that we turned a blind eye to will not continue. Anything you do again that’s not in line with the law, we will crack down on you,” he said.
The president reiterates that while his government is committed to nurturing The Gambia’s democratic system, it will not tolerate anyone acting outside the law. He urges the people of Foni to accept the fact that no government remains in power forever.
Kaddy Camara, former National Assembly Member for Foni Berefet, also appealed to residents to refrain from instigating violence. She cautioned that anyone attempting such actions would face consequences and reminded locals that several Foni natives who died abroad during Jammeh’s regime were denied burial rites in the country.
