The Gambia Police Force and stakeholders validate Police Bill

The Gambia Police Force has successfully concluded its three-day Police Bill validation workshop, held at the Bakadagi Hotel in Kololi.

The workshop, which commenced on August 27, 2024, brought together external stakeholders, including regional governors, chiefs, Alkalos, and other partners, to review and validate the proposed Police Bill.

Supported by the GIZ Police Programme, this workshop focused on ensuring that the revised Police Bill aligns with the needs of the community and the principles of democratic policing.

During the closing ceremony, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Ebrima Bah spoke on behalf of Inspector General of Police Seedy Mukhtar Touray. AIG Bah expressed his gratitude to all participants and extended special thanks to GIZ, particularly through Teresa Olbert, for their invaluable support throughout the process.

Speaking on behalf of the GIZ Police Programme, Teresa Olbert reassured the Gambia Police Force of GIZ’s ongoing commitment to supporting the force in its reform efforts.

In an interview, Councilor Bittaye from the Ministry of Justice, who was a participant in the workshop, applauded the GPF for taking proactive steps to repeal the current Police Act, stating that the new bill is a necessary update that addresses the current realities of policing in The Gambia.

The successful conclusion of this workshop marks a significant milestone in the journey towards a more effective and community-centered policing framework in The Gambia.
