During the celebration of Spain’s National Day, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain in Dakar, overseeing The Gambia, Dolores Ríos Peset, said her country remains determined to continue working closely with The Gambia in key areas of national development.
Spain’s National Day, known as Fiesta Nacional de España, is observed every year on October 12. The occasion marks Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas in 1492, an event that heralded Spain’s emergence as a global power and continues to symbolise unity and shared heritage across the Hispanic world.
Ambassador Ríos Peset delivered her remarks at the Ebujeng Theatre in Kanifing before an audience of Spanish nationals, diplomats, and senior Gambian officials, including representatives of the People’s Republic of China. She described the day as one of pride and reflection for all Spanish citizens worldwide.
“Today represents a remarkable moment in our history, and we celebrate this alongside all Spanish citizens globally. It is a day of pride as we remember our founding fathers and continue to strive for the progress of our beloved country,” she said.
The Spanish envoy praised the longstanding friendship between The Gambia and Spain, highlighting their close cooperation in areas such as governance, education, and migration. She made particular reference to the Spain–Gambia circular migration initiative, describing it as an important framework for legal mobility and job creation for Gambian youths.
While the programme has recently faced setbacks after reports that some Gambian workers failed to return upon completion of their contracts, Spain has continued to engage constructively with Gambian authorities to strengthen the agreement and ensure its long-term success.
Ambassador Ríos Peset also commended the Spanish community in The Gambia for their contributions to cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the two nations.
Speaking on behalf of the Gambian government, Foreign Affairs Minister Seringe Modou Njie conveyed appreciation to the Kingdom of Spain for its enduring partnership and consistent support.
“We are thankful to the people and government of the Kingdom of Spain. Over the years, we have maintained a strong relationship that remains mutually beneficial. Spain has stood with The Gambia in many important ways,” Minister Njie said.
He extended congratulations to Spain on the occasion of its national celebration, adding, “We join you in commemorating this historic day with great joy and friendship.”
The colourful event featured live music, Spanish cuisine, and artistic performances, creating a lively atmosphere that celebrated both Spanish culture and the growing bond between the two countries.
