The Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, has reiterated that the safety and security of journalists is not a privilege, but a fundamental right.
Dr. Ceesay made the remarks during the tenth edition of the Gambia Journalism Awards, held at the Sir Dawda K. Jawara Conference Hall in Bijilo.
“The safety and security of journalists is not a privilege but a right—one that must be protected by all actors, including the State, the media industry, and society at large,” he said.
Speaking on this year’s theme, “A Decade of Excellence: Strengthening Journalism for Democracy, Accountability, and the Safety of Journalists,” Dr. Ceesay described it as profoundly fitting. He stressed that excellence in journalism is not accidental but earned through professionalism, dedication, and ethical reporting.
“Journalism is a cornerstone of any functioning democracy, holding power to account and providing citizens with the information they need to participate meaningfully in national life,” he added.
Dr. Ceesay praised the Gambia Press Union (GPU) for its transformative role in the media sector over the years, highlighting its work in training, advocacy, partnerships, and annual awards.
“The GPU has fostered a culture of excellence that we can all be proud of. Your efforts have strengthened the fabric of our democracy and empowered countless journalists to pursue the truth with courage and clarity,” he said.
He further noted that the Gambian government recognizes the importance of a free and vibrant press.
“Journalism is a public good, and for it to thrive, we must ensure that those who carry out this essential work do so in an environment that is safe, supportive, and conducive to professional growth,” Dr. Ceesay stated.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ongoing legal reforms that promote media freedom and responsibility, as well as strengthened collaboration with institutions such as the GPU, the Media Council, Information Commission, PURA, and other sector partners.
He added that these initiatives will enhance access to information, promote transparency and accountability, and ensure the safety of journalists both online and offline.
Dr. Ceesay urged journalists to maintain professionalism and resist sensational reporting, emphasizing: “Facts prevail over falsehood.”
In conclusion, he congratulated the GPU nominees, noting that their investigative stories, photographs, and broadcasts have illuminated the nation, exposed injustices, and given voice to the voiceless.
