Lamin J. Darboe, leader of the National Unity Party (NUP), has called on Gambians to “strip off” leadership responsibilities from presidents who seek to overstay in office.
Speaking at his first major political rally since assuming the NUP leadership in his hometown of Gunjur, Dr. Darboe argued that any president who treats the office as personal property should not be entrusted with national leadership.
“Leaders who think that the State House is theirs and therefore should not leave that office – I believe Gambians must not elect such personalities,” he remarked.
Darboe described The Gambia, which has elected only three presidents in 60 years, as a country with stagnating growth, noting that its development has been slow despite independence.
He urged citizens to hold leaders accountable, saying: “Gambians wore the shirt of power on the president and can strip it off if he fails to serve the interests of the electorate.”
The NUP leader criticized both former and current administrations for failing to meet the aspirations of Gambians, citing worsening conditions across sectors as motivation for his presidential bid.
“The Gambia cannot improve despite its abundant resources due to poor governance,” he said. “Progress is only possible under a government that manages resources responsibly and prioritizes national development.”
