Raise The Young Foundation (RTYF) recently spearheaded a major environmental initiative, planting 10,000 mangrove seedlings at the Bakau Tanbi Wetland to protect the country’s fragile coastal ecosystem.
The event welcomed local volunteers and community members, with Alieu Badara Jallow, RTYF’s Environmental Coordinator, opening the program by warmly greeting participants and emphasizing the importance of collective action in environmental conservation.
Muhammad Hydara, Secretary General of the Gambia Environmental Alliance, guided volunteers through the event, highlighting the vital role mangroves play in protecting biodiversity, preventing coastal erosion, and supporting sustainable livelihoods. Hydara also shared practical tips on how communities can safeguard the wetland ecosystem.
Yankuba Keita, CEO and Founder of RTYF, remarked, “Our wetlands are invaluable resources that require urgent protection. Through initiatives like this, we empower our youth and communities to actively participate in preserving our environment for future generations.”
The initiative not only strengthened local ecosystems but also provided volunteers with hands-on knowledge about environmental stewardship. Community leaders praised the collaboration, underscoring the importance of partnerships between NGOs and local stakeholders in preserving The Gambia’s natural heritage.
