Questions Raised Over Alhagie Kurang’s Political Consistency and Influence

Fresh debate has emerged over the political credibility of Alhagie Kurang following a series of public statements and actions that critics say reflect personal grievances rather than principled politics, raising questions about his consistency and influence within Gambian political life.

Kurang’s recent remarks about his political journey have renewed scrutiny of his approach to national politics. In a widely discussed statement, he openly admitted that he would not have joined the United Democratic Party (UDP) if Talib had been selected as flag bearer, a comment many observers say points to a political outlook driven more by personal preference than by ideology.

“I am in politics because I love this country,” Kurang has repeatedly stated. Critics, however, argue that his actions do not align with this claim. Much of his public engagement has centred on attacking the Kanifing Lord Mayor and members of the Bensouda family, a focus that critics say diverts attention from policy discussions and broader national development issues.

Concerns deepened during the Kanifing Municipal Council mayoral election. Although his party did not field a candidate, Kurang publicly endorsed the National People’s Party candidate, Bakary Badjie. The endorsement did not translate into electoral success, reinforcing perceptions that Kurang’s political backing carries limited influence.

Political analysts note that credibility in politics is built on consistency and clearly defined values. Kurang’s frequent shifts in position, they argue, have weakened public trust. One observer remarked that credibility is earned through action rather than statements.

As Gambians become more discerning, analysts suggest the public is increasingly less receptive to political rhetoric that is not matched by tangible results. Without a clear, principle driven agenda, Kurang may continue to struggle to command public confidence in an increasingly competitive political landscape.
