Aji Yam Secka, Deputy Party Leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has called on the government of President Adama Barrow to immediately release Lawyer Borry S. Touray and drop all charges against him.

Touray is currently detained at the Police Headquarters in Banjul.

Touray, one of the senior UDP executives was summoned by the Gambia Police Force (GPF) on Thursday, December 4, for questioning before being charged with incitement of violence and subsequently detained.

Speaking to journalists at the police headquarters, Secka described Touray’s detention as unjust, noting that similar statements made by other public figures, including President Barrow, have not led to charges. She said the continued detention mirrors tactics used during the 22-year regime of former President Yahya Jammeh to suppress political opponents.

“What happens to Lawyer Borry Touray is really unfortunate and wrong. This is what we have been fighting under the Jammeh regime, and we will not allow President Adama Barrow to continue using the same playbook,” Secka remarked.

Haggi Suwaneh UDP National Youth President, also condemned the detention, calling it politically motivated. He claimed that the police acted only after comments from Seedy S.K. Njie and the National People’s Party (NPP) regarding Touray’s statements, alleging that the government is attempting to silence opposition voices.

“Lawyer Touray was merely reminding the President of the constitutional limit on presidential terms and the importance of ethical leadership,” Suwaneh said. He criticized the selective application of the law, noting that no action was taken against other individuals who made potentially inciting statements.

Hon. Lamin Ceesay, National Assembly Member for Kiang West, described Touray’s detention as unfair and politically motivated. He indicated that Counsel Lamin S. Camara had so far failed to secure bail for Touray and called on UDP supporters to show solidarity at the police headquarters.

Several other UDP members and supporters expressed similar condemnation of Touray’s detention, calling for his immediate release and the dropping of all charges.

Meanwhile, a statement made by the Gambia Police Force on Thursday evening confirmed Touray’s arrest.

“The Gambia Police Force hereby informs the public that Mr. Borry S. Touray was on Thursday, December 4, 2025, invited to the Police Headquarters in Banjul, where he was confronted with statements he made that constitute incitement to violence,” the statement read.

“The engagement forms part of an active police inquiry into remarks considered capable of provoking unrest or undermining public safety.”

“The GPF emphasizes that incitement to violence is a serious offence under the laws of The Gambia, and such conduct will be addressed with the full force of the law,” the Police statement added.

It concluded by stating that Touray, accordingly, has been charged with “Incitement to Violence” under Section 58 of the Criminal Offences Act, 2025.
