The Gambia Police Force has confirmed the arrest of an individual at the Jenoi checkpoint on January 24, 2025. The suspect, identified as Lamin Marong, a resident of Farato and employee at CBG was traveling in a private vehicle with registration number WCR 7133 C. The arrest took place around 16:15 GMT when law enforcement officers, conducting routine vehicle checks, discovered a multicolor bag containing $57,800 and D370,000 in cash.
The suspects claimed that he was en route to Mandora in Badibou, North Bank Region. Upon further inspection, officers counted the cash in the presence of the suspects. It was confirmed that the $57,800 was in $100 denominations, while the D370,000 was categorized into three bundles: D290,000 in D100 notes, D70,000 in D50 notes, and D10,000 also in D50 notes.
Lamin Marong, the Central Bank employee, stated that the U.S. dollars were provided by a senior official at CBG for delivery to his father. When asked about the reason for carrying such a large sum of money, he replied that the purpose was known only to the sender. Regarding the Gambian Dalasis, Marong explained that a relative had given him old currency notes that were exchanged for new ones, while the remaining amount was intended for a forthcoming event in his village.
The suspects have since been handed over to the Gambia Police Force at the Mansakonko Police Station for further investigation and necessary action.
