The inquest into the death of Omar Badjie yesterday resumed before Brikama Court with the testimony of the sixth witness, Majula Jammeh, a resident of Mandinary.
It could be recalled that Omar died after an encounter with police officers on 26 September 2025 in Mandinary Village.
In her testimony, Jammeh told the court that she saw police officers holding Omar near her compound gate, where he was seated and appeared weak. She said one of the officers repeatedly asked Omar, “Will you go or not?” and Omar responded, “I cannot go,” a response the officer insisted was untrue.
According to Jammeh, Omar then told the officers he wanted water. “They told him they didn’t have water and that he should think of what he was in,” she said. “I told them to let me give him water. I ran into my compound, fetched water, and handed it to the police. They gave it to Omar.”
She noted that Omar managed to have one sip but struggled with the second. He then asked the officers to pour the remaining water on his head so that his clothes would not get wet. The officers complied.
Jammeh said Omar then lied down on the ground raised his head and looked at her. She told him, “My brother, I know you, but this world is not what it is. You should not have any problem with authority.”
Jammeh said the officers searched Omar, removing a simple phone and some money before placing the items back in his pocket. They asked him again whether he would go. “He said he couldn’t. He told them he was feeling dizzy,” she recounted.
“They pulled him up and sat him again. The officer who was beating him slapped him,” Jammeh told the court.
She said when Omar lied down once more, the officers again demanded him to stand. She recalled that one of the officers instructed the others to lift him. “Someone held his right hand, another his left, and another his legs. His head was bent, and his hands were in handcuffs.”
Jammeh went on to narrate that while they were going, they met a female police officer who advised that the handcuffs be removed, saying it would “disturb him.”
Then, Principal Magistrate Anna asked if the witness knew the officers’ identities or whereabouts. Jammeh said she did not; only that the officers were from Mandinary Police Station. She also said she would not be able to identify them if they were presented before the court.
Asked if she knew where Omar was taken to after the incident, Jammeh replied she did not. “I later received a call telling me the person I gave water to, had passed away,” she remarked.
Asked what she believed caused Omar’s death, she answered: “I think what the police did to him—beat him.”
Jammeh confirmed she knew Omar from Mandinary, where he worked with her younger brother at the mortuary, though they were not related.
With no further statement or documents to tender, Magistrate Anna discharged the witness and adjourned proceedings to Monday, 8 December 2025, for the next testimony.
