Sanna Manjang, a fugitive wanted in connection with multiple killings, was yesterday remanded at Mile II Central Prison following a hearing at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court presided over by Principal Magistrate Sallah M’bai.
Manjang faces three counts of murder, all allegedly committed with malice aforethought, dating back to 2004 and 2006. The charges include the killing of Deyda Hydara in 2004 at Kanifing, and the deaths of Ndongo Mboob and Haruna Jammeh in 2006 at Kanali and other locations in The Gambia.
The prosecution, represented by ASP Colley and Commissioner Sanneh on behalf of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), outlined the specifics of each count, emphasizing that the accused allegedly used a firearm in all three killings.
Commissioner Sanneh applied under Section 72 of the new Criminal Offenses Act for the case to be transferred to the Special Criminal Division at the High Court, citing the gravity of the offenses. He further requested that Manjang remain in prison custody at Mile II pending the transfer.
In her ruling, Principal Magistrate M’bai acknowledged the seriousness of the charges and ordered that Manjang be remanded at Mile II Central Prison until the High Court assumes jurisdiction over the case.
The remanding of Manjang marks a significant step in the Gambian justice system’s efforts to bring closure to these long-standing cases, which have drawn public attention due to their violent nature and the prolonged evasion of the accused.
