Ministry of Health Marks World Mental Health Day with Awareness Symposium

By: Rohey Samba

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with civil society organizations, held a one-day symposium on mental health awareness as part of activities commemorating World Mental Health Day. The event focused on promoting understanding, recognition, and destigmatization of mental health conditions through education and open dialogue.

Representing the Ministry of Interior, Ebrima K. Mendy emphasized the invisible impact of crises, saying, “This theme compels us to recognize that a crisis is not merely measured in destroyed infrastructure or displaced populations. The deepest and most enduring scars are often invisible wounds inflicted on the human mind and spirit. When disaster strikes, whether through conflict, flood, drought, or the silent epidemic of substance abuse, the psychological trauma can last a lifetime, long after the physical emergency has passed.”

Dr. Jainaba Jallow, team lead at TanKa Tanka, highlighted the importance of mental health, stating, “Mental health is crucial because it is fundamental to overall wellbeing, influencing how we think, feel, and act. It is as important as physical health.”

Momodou T. Nyassi, Director of Health Services at the Ministry of Health, stressed collective responsibility, urging society to support mental wellbeing alongside physical health: “As we commemorate this important day, let us reaffirm our collective responsibility. Let us break the stigma, support one another, and ensure that in every emergency big or small protecting the mind should be treated with the same urgency as protecting the body.”

The symposium aimed to encourage early treatment of mental health conditions, help individuals cope with stress and life events, and foster a more supportive environment for those struggling with mental illness. Key objectives include challenging stereotypes, promoting wellbeing, and ensuring that individuals can access the help and treatment they need.

Through initiatives like these, the Ministry of Health hopes to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and inspire communities to take proactive steps toward supporting those affected by mental health challenges.
