Minister Sillah Unveils Major Transport and Infrastructure Reforms for a Climate-Smart Gambia

By Michaella Faith Wright

The Minister of Transport, Works, and Infrastructure, Ebrima Sillah, has revealed that his ministry is undertaking extensive policy reforms aimed at transforming The Gambia’s transport ecosystem into a more efficient, safe, and climate-smart system.

Speaking on Coffee Time with Peter Gomez, Minister Sillah said the ministry is currently engaged in a comprehensive review of the country’s transport master plan, with the help of consultants, to identify sustainable models of transportation.

“The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure is doing a whole lot of policy review to bring in reform processes within the transport ecosystem,” he explained.

“We have consultants reviewing our transport master plan to look at different models of transportation — not only vehicle transport but also green, climate-smart transport, which we know is the future.”

He noted that the reforms will be guided by policy, data, and facts to ensure the country’s development aligns with its aspirations. According to him, the ministry is also focusing on improving urban transportation with a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly system.

On road safety, Minister Sillah described the situation as alarming, revealing that The Gambia records between 30 to 60 road accidents monthly, many of them fatal.

“We have now formed a multi-stakeholder platform working with the National Transport Union, the Gambia Police Force, regional administrations, and civil society organizations to ensure road safety,” he said.

He added that the ministry is mapping dangerous road spots and installing signs, bumps, and road furniture, particularly in high-risk areas across the country.
