Mali Wins Key Concessions in Final Deal With Barrick Gold

By: The Fatu Network News Desk

Mali has secured a significant outcome in its dispute with Canadian miner Barrick Gold, with the company agreeing to operate under the 2023 mining code, accept a 30 percent state stake, and pay more than 240 billion CFA francs in taxes and settlement fees.

The deal brings an end to a two-year standoff that began when Mali’s authorities moved to revise mining arrangements and enforce the new legal framework across major operations.

Barrick had initially challenged the changes through legal avenues, but has now withdrawn its arbitration case and resumed operations under the updated terms, while Mali drops domestic legal actions and releases detained employees.
