Latrikunda residents blame roadside food vendors for littering the gutters.

The residents of Latrikunda in the Kanifing Municipality told this medium in an exclusive vox pop that roadside vendors are largely responsible for the blockage of gutters which affects the free flow of rainwater.

A multitude of residents as well as market vendors said night-time chicken legs vendors and  other food sellers throw rubbish and dirty water into the gutters meant for drainage.

” At night, the market and the roadside are only. The food vendors capitalize on this to throw their leftovers and any trash with them.” Basirou Mbye asserted while calling on the vendors to desist from the act.

Around the ‘Cow Junction ‘, filthy water could be seen near the gutters which attract an unpleasant smell.

” This is not good for our health. We pay tax, we pay rent for our shops but the scattered food vendors are disturbing us. They need to be hygienic” Salieu Jobe, a fashion shop owner laments

Ebrima Sallah and Mama Jang Jallow both mobile phone vendors threaten to report any food vendor to the authorities at the Kanifing Municipality who is caught littering the gutters.

“The KMC  and the National Roads road Authority often do cleansing of the gutters but the food vendors make it dirty” Bailo Jawo said.

Anti-littering law is still in place but the full implementation remains a challenge.
