Kafuta Murder Suspect Remanded as Case Goes to High Court

By: Isatou Sarr

A 25-year-old Gambian man, Mustapha Jallow, was on Wednesday remanded at Mile 2 Central Prisons after he admitted to killing Bakary Bah in Kafuta earlier this month.

Jallow appeared before Principal Magistrate Anna O. Mendy of Brikama Magistrates’ Court, charged with a single count of murder.

Police Prosecutor SGT 4422 M.J. Sallah represented the Inspector General of Police, while the accused stood in court without legal representation.

According to the charge sheet, Jallow is alleged to have stabbed Bakary Bah in the neck with a knife on 1st December 2025 in Kafuta, West Coast Region, “with malice aforethought,” thereby causing his death. The charge is brought under Section 115 of the Criminal Offences Act 2025.

The particulars of the offence were read to the accused, who informed the court he understood the charge and proceeded to plead guilty.

Following the plea, Prosecutor Sallah applied for the matter to be transferred to the Special Criminal Division of the High Court, arguing that a murder charge falls outside the jurisdiction of the magistrates’ court and requires trial by the High Court. He also urged the court to remand the accused pending his next appearance.

Magistrate Mendy agreed, ruling that the prosecution’s request had merit. She ordered the transfer of the case to the High Court for reassignment by the Chief Justice and directed that Jallow be remanded at Mile 2 until he is brought before the Special Criminal Division.

The accused is expected to appear before the High Court at a later date to formally take his plea and commence trial.
