The government of The Gambia has taken corrective action in Nyagen Village, Central River Region, following allegations of improper use of an official village stamp during the ongoing voter registration exercise.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Information, authorities launched an inquiry after reports suggested the stamp used to verify residency and voter eligibility may have been misused. Regional officials, led by the governor, convened a meeting with key local leaders to investigate the matter.
The village head, or Alkalo, acknowledged that the stamp had been entrusted to his son. In response, officials have confiscated the stamp and placed it under secure custody to preserve the integrity of the registration process. Consultations are ongoing to appoint a neutral custodian while investigations continue.
The government warned that administrative tools are state property and must not be used for unauthorized purposes, adding that any violations will face legal consequences. The govenment reiterated their commitment to ensuring a transparent and credible voter registration process for all eligible citizens.
