The Government of The Gambia has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving universal electricity access by the end of 2026, with key rural electrification projects now fully funded and ready for implementation nationwide.
Speaking in the National Assembly on Wednesday, Honourable Minister for Petroleum and Energy, Nani Juwara, said several villages in Jarra West, including Darussalam, Saraseti, Kohele, Fonkoi Kunda, Medina Fonkoi, and Medina Kani Kunda, have been incorporated into the ECOWAS Regional Electricity Access Project (ECOREAP). According to the Minister, surveys have been completed, contracts signed, and contractors are set to begin work in early 2026.
“The contract has been signed, and mobilisation is underway. Funding is secured, and these communities are set for electrification,” Minister Juwara told lawmakers, highlighting the government’s structured approach to expanding electricity access in underserved areas.
He also confirmed that additional villages in Samir, including Forri, Madiana, Sotokwe, Manna, and Salikeni, will be connected under the Mission 300 project, a joint initiative funded by the World Bank and the African Development Bank. Work in these communities is scheduled to start by mid-2026, ensuring no region is left behind in the national electrification drive.
In Iliasa constituency, where only 23 of 53 villages currently have electricity, plans are underway to connect the remaining 30 villages, with funding secured through the Programmed Access Fund (PAF). Similarly, the nine remaining villages in Lower Niumi are slated for connection under ongoing rural electrification initiatives.
Minister Juwara stressed that the government has prioritised electricity in the current budget, with additional resources allocated to accelerate rollout. “The President has committed to achieving universal access before the end of 2026, and we are fully committed to that promise,” he said, assuring lawmakers that implementation is already in progress.
