Gold Rush in Eastern Senegal Leaves Poverty, Pollution, and Insecurity Behind

By: The Fatu Network News Desk

An exclusive investigation published by Seneweb into Senegal’s gold rich Kédougou region reveals how the discovery of gold has turned one of the country’s poorest areas into a magnet for fortune seekers chasing the dream of quick wealth. The region now draws people from across West Africa, with dozens of nationalities converging on its mining sites in the hope of striking gold.

Behind that promise, however, lies a grim reality marked by deep poverty, deadly tunnel collapses, rising insecurity, and widespread exploitation, including prostitution and human trafficking.

The report shows how artisanal gold mining relies heavily on toxic chemicals such as mercury and cyanide, polluting rivers like the Falémé, a major river in eastern Senegal, destroying forests, and exposing entire communities to serious health risks.

Much of the gold is smuggled out of the country beyond state control, and despite repeated crackdowns by security forces, hundreds of illegal mining sites continue to operate, leaving Kédougou’s gold to benefit a few while devastating lives, the environment, and stability in this fragile border region.
