GID Commissions Solar Installations at Border Posts

Recently, Assistant Director General of Immigration, Olimatou Jammeh, supported by Deputy Commissioner Hatab Bojang and Assistant Commissioner Binta K.J. Barrow, embarked on a two-day nationwide trek to commission solar installations at Immigration Border Posts. The initiative was funded by the Tourism Diversification and Resilience (TDR) Gambia Project.

The Tourism Diversification and Resilience in The Gambia Project (TDRGP) is a five-year initiative supported by IDA Investment Project Financing (IPF) and implemented by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture. Through its partnership with GID, the project has reinforced border management efforts by providing solar-powered facilities and ICT equipment to enable effective operations.

The high-powered solar systems were installed to support the operationalization of the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) at the Nyamanarr, Sabi, Misera, Dimbaya, Darsilameh, and Kartong Border Posts. This intervention will enhance data collection on migration flows, strengthen the Tourism Unit, and further improve border security and migration management in line with Goal 3 of the GID Strategic Plan.

While commissioning the installations and formalizing their custody under GID, ADG Jammeh, on behalf of DG Ebrima Mboob, expressed profound appreciation to the Ministry of Tourism and Culture for the timely support. She emphasized the invaluable role of the project in strengthening GID’s mandate and urged officers to safeguard the equipment to ensure durability and sustainability.

Speaking at the event, the Project Director, Mr. Ceesay, reaffirmed the Tourism Ministry’s commitment to supporting GID, recognising its crucial role in data collection and management, particularly on traveller information in relation to tourists.

The solar installations under the TDR Project not only facilitate data collection and management but also improve access to basic amenities, boosting the morale of border officials and contributing to GID’s vision of promoting occupational safety.

The GID expresses sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and all stakeholders for their continuous collaboration and support.
