GASAN Raise Awareness for Autism

The Gambia Autism Support and Advocacy Network (GASAN), on Saturday, 11th October 2025, held a successful annual walk and run for autism. An event that brought together participants, advocates, and supporters, and was held in Arch 22nd, Banjul.

The event had two race categories: a 10 km run, which began from Westfield, and a 6km run beginning at Sting Corner, and both ended at the Arch 22 pavilion, with the police support to ensure safety throughout the event.

Meanwhile, upon completing the race, a walk segment followed, beginning at the arch 22 to Gamtel house, Banjul. The atmosphere was energetic and united.

Sereh Saho, the founder and president of Together for Autism Gambia and a mother to an autistic child, advised that every parent should be their child’s biggest advocate, because most people in The Gambia do not know what autism means.

She added that parents should not hide their children because of their differences, but rather be their advocate. The more parents talk about their child, the more they raise awareness in communities, and the autistic child will boldly walk around the streets with no judgment or negative comments.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon Bakary Badjie, highlighted his continued support for inclusive initiatives and raising awareness of people in rural and urban areas.

Both students and staff from the Methodist school actively participated and contributed to the lively atmosphere of the day.

The event underscored GASAN’s commitment to raise awareness, advocate inclusion, and build a more compassionate society for individuals on the autism spectrum in The Gambia.
