GAP Urges Government to Consider Accepting Jammeh’s Return Under Strict Conditions

The Gambia Action Party (GAP) leader, Musa Yali Batchilly, has called on former President Yahya Jammeh to apologise to the Gambian people for the atrocities committed during his 22-year rule, saying such a gesture would pave the way for genuine reconciliation.

“I am appealing to President Adama Barrow and his administration to contemplate Jammeh’s return under strict and equitable conditions that foster justice and national unity,” Batchilly said. He noted that leadership is temporary and urged the former president to accept that his tenure has ended.

“Leadership is temporary, but the nation and its citizens are enduring. Former President Yahya Jammeh must realise that no one stands above the country or its people. If he genuinely wishes to return, it must be with a spirit of humility, repentance, and a focus on national healing,” he asserted.

GAP called on Jammeh to publicly apologise to the Gambian populace for the suffering, fear, and division experienced during his rule, stressing that true reconciliation can only begin with accountability and sincerity.

“We express our gratitude to the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), and ECOWAS for their ongoing efforts to uphold peace, stability, and democratic governance in The Gambia. Their role remains crucial in ensuring that justice and peace prevail,” Batchilly added. The party further proposed that 50 percent of Jammeh’s wealth be used to compensate victims and their families.

Batchilly also stressed that Jammeh must completely withdraw from political life and refrain from engaging in partisan activities if he returns to the country.

“The return of Jammeh should not fracture our nation but rather reinforce our collective commitment to building a just and democratic Gambia for everyone,” he said.
