Gambians Demand Transparency Over ID Card Delays and Double Payments

A growing number of Gambians are raising concerns over the prolonged delays in the issuance of national ID cards, with some citizens alleging they are being forced to repay for a service they had already paid for months ago.

One such case involves a woman who applied for her national ID card back in March, made the required payment, and was issued a receipt. However, despite waiting for several months, her ID card remains unprinted. When she inquired about the delay, she was shocked to be told that she needed to reapply and repay for the service — even after presenting the original payment receipt.

This situation has sparked outrage, especially as reports indicate that a new company is now handling ID card printing services. While such transitions are not uncommon, many citizens are questioning whether the change is being used as an excuse to exploit applicants.

“Is the government trying to scam us?” the affected woman’s son asked, echoing the frustrations of many Gambians.

The lack of communication and transparency surrounding the issue is deepening public mistrust. Citizens are calling on the authorities to explain why payments made to the previous service provider are no longer being honored — and to clarify whether the new company will reimburse those affected or process their applications without additional charges.

In a country where many struggle to afford basic services, the prospect of repaying for an ID card is not only unfair but unacceptable. The government must address these concerns urgently and ensure that no Gambian is forced to pay twice for the same service.

As the calls for transparency and accountability grow louder, the authorities must act swiftly to restore public trust. Gambians deserve clear answers — and above all, fairness.
