The Gambia has completed a study assessing the integration of social and financial education into the national curriculum.

The exercise was jointly organized by ChildFund The Gambia in partnership with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE), Aflatoun International, the University of Utrecht, and the University of The Gambia.

The randomized controlled trial covered 90 primary schools, including 60 intervention and 30 control schools, reaching over 2,100 students. The study trained teachers, cluster monitors, and school heads in two phases to ensure sustainability.

The results were presented at an event held at Metzy Hotel recently, attended by government officials, civil society representatives, academics, and development partners.

ChildFund Country Director Musu Kuta Komma said the initiative reflected a shared commitment to equipping children and educators with essential life skills.

“Over the past two years, ChildFund implemented two key programs under the Aflatoun initiative: a Master Trainers Training in September 2023, which trained 21 participants to roll out social and financial education nationwide, and a Community of Practice Training in October 2023, involving 20 cluster monitors and regional coordinators to strengthen school-level integration,” Mrs. Komma revealed.

Permanent Secretary Paul Scopfer, representing the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, emphasized that evidence from the study would inform policy and curriculum planning.

Gambian Vice President, Muhammed B.S. Jallow, commended the partnership, noting that the program equipped children with skills to think critically, act responsibly, and contribute to society. He expressed strong support for its integration into the national curriculum.

The initiative highlights collaboration between the government, development partners, and educational institutions, aiming to provide lasting opportunities for Gambian children.
